E lucevan le stelle

From TOSCA ...... by Puccini

Mario Cavaradossi, a painter, tries to write a farewell letter to his betrothed, Tosca. He is facing the firing squad for protecting a political prisoner,
and asks the jailer to deliver a letter and a ring to Tosca after his death. After writing a few lines, engulfed by memories, he leaves off writing and sings his heart out.

E lucevan le stelle

And the stars shone brightly

e olezzava la terra,

And the air was mild and fragrant

stridea l'uscio dell' orto,

The garden gate was opened,

e un passo sfiorava la rena...

And footsteps approached so lightly

 Entrava ella, fragrante,

She stood before me, radiant

Mi cadea fra le braccia...

In my arms I held her...

Oh dolci baci, o languide carezze,

Oh fond embrace, oh languorous caresses,

Mentr'io fremente

My heart was trembling

La belle forme discioglea dai veli!

Captured by the glory of her rapturous beauty!

Svani per sempre il sogno mio d'amore...

But now my dream of love is destroyed forever

L'ora e' fuggita...

The hour is fleeting,

E muoio disperato!

And I must die despairing!

E muoio disperato!

And I must die despairing!

E non ho amato mai tanto la vita!

How cruel to die when life has never been sweeter -

tanto la vita!

Never has life been sweeter!
